A new burst of arctic air was on the way, and there is an "increasing potential of another significant winter storm" for Eastern states this weekend, the National Weather Service said.
The death toll continues to rise from a massive winter storm that left an ongoing spell of freezing weather in its wake.
An extreme cold warning is in place until 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, with the lowest temperatures coming early this morning, according to the National Weather Service Charleston’s 5 a.m. update. NWS warned of hazardous travel conditions, including possible black ice, and a winter weather advisory is in place until 10 a.m. Sunday.

Extreme cold persists in New York City; Mayor Mamdani announces single-room warming shelter units
A 14th person has died from the cold weather in New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced late Saturday night.
On Sunday at 12:43 a.m. an updated extreme cold warning was released by the NWS Wakefield VA valid between 1 a.m. and 10 a.m. The warning is for Gates, Pasquotank, Camden, Chowan and Perquimans counties.
On Saturday at 1:42 p.m. an updated extreme cold warning was released by the NWS Wakefield VA valid for Sunday between 1 a.m. and 10 a.m. The warning is for Northampton, Hertford and Bertie counties.

February outlook: Weakening polar vortex to extend extreme cold spell even longer for millions in eastern US
The bitter cold temperatures that have left a chill over the eastern half of the country aren't going anywhere, as a major disruption to the Polar Vortex is coming this month.
At 5:40 p.m. on Friday, the National Weather Service issued an extreme cold warning valid from 7 p.m. until Saturday 11 a.m. for Cambria County.
